Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag will debut Oct. 29 and the PlayStation 4 and Xbox 720 versions will ship at the same time, according to the title's creative director.
In a recent interview, Jean Guesdon, one of the lead developers at Ubisoft Montreal, was asked whether there would be a delay between ship dates for the PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii U version of the game and the next-generation edition to run on PS4 and Xbox 720.
At around 5:40 into the video Guesdon says that all versions of the game have the "same ship" status. It was a quick slip of the tongue, but nonetheless a fateful one. With just a few choice words, Guesdon not only confirmed the ship date for one of the mostly hotly anticipated next-gen titles currently in production, but he also inadvertently outed the fact that Xbox 720 would ship at least as early as PS4, possibly even earlier.
It's possible Guesdon simply misspoke, but as International Digital Times astutely points out, "the casualness of the moment suggests that the guys and gals working on 'Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag' are developing next-gen versions with the intention of shipping everything in October."
Ubisoft has already backpedaled on that statement. Speaking to VG247, the studio said Guesdon's comments referred solely to the Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii U versions of the title. Given the context of the conversation, though, we're not necessarily buying it. It should be noted that Ubisoft did not actually retract the claim that the title would be ready for next-gen consoles come October — it only retracted the apparent confirmation Guesdon issued.
A previously leaked promotional video for Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag already confirmed the game would be at least partially set in and around islands in the Caribbean Sea during the Golden Age of Piracy. Three cities have been confirmed: Havana, Nassau, and Kingston.
An October release was already widely anticipated for PS4, since it's unlikely Microsoft would put itself in the position of playing catch-up with Sony so early in a new product cycle.
