Wii Mini: Nintendo announces Canadian exclusive console for holidays
Nintendo has announced it will be selling the Wii Mini in Canada, just in time for the holiday season.
The console, a smaller version of their older Wii, will be available in stores on December 7 for $99. Consumers should take care not to confuse it with the technologyWii U, the company’s HD console that launched less than two weeks ago.
The Wii Mini is an updated and smaller version of the hugely successful Wii system that launched in 2006, whose legacy was to bring motion control gaming into the home. Its success forced competitors to match that capability, launching systems such as the Xbox Kinect and PlayStation Move. The original Wii is also one of the smallest home consoles ever released.
The new Wii Mini is smaller and available in matte black with a red border. It will not have Internet capabilities nor will it play Nintendo GameCube games, two features offered by the original Wii.
“There are games in the Wii library for every type of player,” said Ron Bertram, Nintendo of Canada’s vice president and general manager in a statement. “Wii Mini is a great gift for the holidays that brings everyone in the family together to play. Wii Mini has a mini price, but it’s all about big fun.”
The Wii has a library of over 1,400 games, with some gems but also many critically reviled titles. Nintendo is releasing many classic games as part of its Nintendo Selects program for $19.99.
Since announcing the Wii U two years ago, Nintendo has released very few new games. The Wii was underpowered compared to its home console competitors, the Xbox 360 and PS3, only playing games in standard definition. With the Wii U, the company was seen to be catching up with its competitors with HD graphics and online play. The Wii U launched on Nov. 18, and the company says it sold 400,000 units in the U.S. in the first week.
As for the Wii Mini, rumours surfaced on gaming blogs on Monday and the device was effectively leaked Tuesday morning through an online promotion from Best Buy Canada.
The launch press release states the Wii Mini is a Canadian exclusive, adding: “No information is available about its potential availability in other territories in the future.”
The original Wii sold more than 100 million units worldwide.
